DIY PROTEIN BARS FOR RACE DAY

DIY PROTEIN BARS FOR RACE DAY

Let’s Talk Protein Bars.

Recently, we have taken it upon ourselves to start making our own protein bars.  We all know that during long sustained workouts, we need to constantly fuel our bodies to achieve maximum benefits. Well an energy/protein bar is easy, lightweight, packed with all kinds of good stuff that your body needs to keep going and pushing yourself to your limits.

Sure, the store bought protein bars can be tasty.  But, sometimes they get hard and are hard to digest.  Have you been on a long training run and gotten hungry to the point where another gel block just isn’t going to cut it?  We have.  But, we’ve also foregone eating anything more because of how protein bars tend to settle (or not settle) mid-workout.  Therefore, also foregoing much needed refueling.

But my real problem with them is that a lot of them are dry and require gobs of amounts of water to drink and get them down.  When my body hurts, I am exhausted, and I’m just holding on for dear life to finish my workout, the last thing I want to do is wonder if I have enough water to get this thing down, or hope I don’t choke this time…

So it got me thinking…..  How hard is it really to make one of these things?  I mean they’ve got some nuts, chocolate, maybe fruit, protein powder, and some kind of binder…say peanut butter, honey or the likes.

After some Googling and looking around at different websites, I came across this website with a handful of recipes on it.  Currently, we have tried just a couple of these bars and we are planning on trying a handful of others in this article.  We’ll let you know how those are as we try them.

PROTEIN BARS WE’VE MADE SO FAR…

As of now, we have tried the Raspberry Chocolate Protein Bars and the Vegan Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Protein Bar.  In regards to the Raspberry Chocolate, I suggest keeping this recipe as-is.  This is a very tasty bar.  One batch makes around 9 bars, with each bar containing roughly 11 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber, 14 grams of sugar, and almost 250 calories – this no bake bar is fantastic!!

The Vegan Peanut Butter Cookie Dough taste is amazing!!  With no cookies in this recipe, it sure still tastes like it. The only thing is, is the recipe provided leaves the bars a bit crumbly.  If that is your thing, then great, but if not then I suggest adding more honey than what they ask or add dark chocolate chips to act as a binder.  Nonetheless, we will be putting this bar into our rotation.  These bad boys pack about 8 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber, 10 grams of sugar, and around 200 calories per bar.

These no bake bars are easy and will take less than 15 minutes to make.  We have been storing ours individually wrapped in the freezer and then taking them out just before our long runs.  They’ll last a week or two in the freezer/fridge.  Now if we could only find reusable individual wrappers of some sort!

Give them a try, or the others in the article and let us know what you think in the comments below!  Take care, train hard, and have an awesome day!
