How To Make Your Own Spearman (so you never miss the spear throw again).

Spearman

Sick and tired of missing the spear throw during a race every time you approach spearman? Same! I mean, it seems like such a silly obstacle to complete burpees for, amiright?

Here’s one easy (and cheap) way you can make your own spearman to up your spear game during a race.  And, don’t forget– you’ll need to buy hay bales or some other alternative to actually throw your spears at.

STEPS TO MAKING YOUR OWN SPEARMAN:

First, you’ll need to purchase supplies.  You can get them at Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware, or any other hardware-type store.  You’ll also need to find hay bales… likely from a local feed store.

You’ll need the following:

  • Hay Bales (2 or 3 will work).
  • 60″ rake handle with steel ferrule such as this one.
  • 10-12″ length galvanized 1/2″ nail
  • Original Gorilla Glue
  • duct tape (optional)

Assemble your spear.  To do this, you’ll need to (carefully) shave the head of the nail off using a hacksaw, grinder, or some other power tool that can safely accomplish the task.  Use caution, wear any applicable safety equipment, and proceed carefully so as not to injure yourself or others.

Next, insert the glue into the ferrule and then insert the nail so that the end you just shaved off goes into the ferrule and the point of the nail is sticking outwards.  Set aside and let it dry. (We let ours dry for a day or two before we used it).

If you like, wrap duct tape around the handle in the spots you plan to hold it so the wood doesn’t split and/or for comfort.  This is optional.

Start taking practice shots.  We started out by mastering the spear a little closer to the hay bales until we got a feeling for how to hold the spear, how to position our bodies, etc…

Once the distance is mastered, we moved back a little bit.  Repeat this until you’re conquering every spear throw from roughly the same distance that you’ll be throwing the spear during a race.  (We guestimate that to be approximately 25-30 feet).  If anyone knows the actual distance, feel free to chime in and let us know!

Last, be sure to sign up for your next race and conquer the spearman obstacle!  Never burpee on this one again, and pat yourself on the back!

If you plan to skip burpees at numerous races, be sure to grab your Spartan season pass ASAP.  Last year, they ran out…quickly!  Happy racing, OCR fam!
