OCR RACE DAY PACKING CHEAT SHEET

As an obstacle course racer, nothing is more exciting than an OCR Race Day; can we get an AROO? AROO!  But if you’re just starting out, you might not think it’s necessary to bring certain items with you.  Here’s why leaving some of these items at home on race day can be a mistake.

All your work, preparation, and training are finally coming to a cumulation of reaching the finish line and achieving what you set out to do.  But what in the world should you bring for yourself afterward?  This list is of our preference, and you may choose a few things differently, but we hope that this helps as a starting point.

NON-NEGOTIABLE:

  • Bag or backpack –  This is essential!!  Why?  To pack all the things you are gonna want to bring with you. Personally, we’ve found a duffel bag works best. Pay for bag check and your stuff will be safe and conveniently located after you cross the finish line.  🙂

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ITEMS:

Extra clothes – Outkast says it the best “So fresh and so clean, clean.”

  • Underwear
  • Shorts/Pants
  • Flip Flops or an extra pair of sneakers and socks
  • Shirt – unless you get a finisher’s T-shirt, then skip on that and wear the finisher’s shirt with pride.  Why?  Cause you deserve to!!
  • Sunscreen (you might hang out after the race and need to re-apply)
  • Ladies might also want to bring an extra sports bra

SOMEWHAT RECOMMEND ITEMS:

These are items that can help you feel somewhat clean and normal-looking after you’ve trounced around in mud all day.

  • Deodorant
  • Hairbrush
  • Towel
  • Hat or sunglasses
  • Ibuprofen
  • Chapstick
  • Trash bag (to put all of your wet, muddy race gear into after you change into the clean set of clothes you brought).

PROBABLY SHOULDN’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT ITEMS:

  • Cell phone (this is obvious, I know, but personally mine doesn’t go everywhere I go so I have to make sure to bring it)
  • Wallet –  you’ll need I.D. to check in or buy post-race beers.  You’ll also want money to pay for food and souvenirs if you feel like grabbing them while at the race venue
  • Cash  – there’s almost always a cash-only parking fee!
  • Any life-saving medicines you generally require (inhaler, etc.)

OPTIONAL ITEMS:

  • Long sleeve if it’s a colder venue/time of year (your body will cool down once you’re done racing)
  • Compression socks (some people like to wear clean ones after the race in addition to during the race, so their muscles don’t get too cold).

This is what we normally bring, but also consider the weather conditions and plan appropriately.

What else would you bring on top of this?  Let us know in the comment section below. We love hearing from our OCR Community Members!
